Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America Wins GM Contracts for Ignition Coil Modules
Plymouth, Mich., November 1, 2001 --- Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America (MEAA), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, announced today it has been awarded contracts to produce ignition coil modules for engines used on General Motors (GM) Corp. cars and trucks.
The coil modules ultimately are expected to be used on GM engines worldwide, tripling MEAA’s current business with GM.
According to MEAA officials, General Motors awarded these ignition coil module contracts because of MEAA’s excellent quality and service records.
"MEAA’s history of low warranty rates, an almost zero parts per million (PPM) in-plant returns, and 100% on-time delivery were all factors in GM’s choice of MEAA," says Tom Coogan, MEAA GM account manager.
In addition, Mitsubishi Electric’s electronics technology was a factor. Mitsubishi Electric was one of the first in the world to integrate electronics into an ignition coil. This eliminates the power electronics from the electronic control unit (ECU) and allows GM to design engines using a coil-per-cylinder approach, increasing reliability and reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI). This is an advance over traditional distributor-based ignition systems.
MEAA will manufacture the ignition coil modules for the newly awarded powertrain programs at its plant in Maysville, KY.
