Mitsubishi Electric has maintained a leading position in submarine cable system technology ever since we supplied major Japanese communications company KDDI-SCS with the world's first 5Gbit/s optical amplified repeater for its TPC-5 project in 1994. Building on that success, Mitsubishi Electric commenced with development and construction of submarine line terminal equipment (SLTE) employing DWDM technology, a field in which we remain a world leader to this day.
Subsequently, in 1999 Mitsubishi Electric supplied KDDI-SCS with the world's first 10Gbit/s transmission technology, which was incorporated into systems known as PC-1, Japan-US and TAT-14. To complete these projects we increased production capacity to 100 repeaters per month with SLTE manufacturing to match, a feat recognized as one of the highest production rates the world has seen.
The incorporation of 10 Gbit/s transmission technology into the PC-1, Japan-US and TAT-14 systems established Mitsubishi Electric's reputation worldwide as a leader in the move towards the terabit era. Even during the global economic downturn we forged ahead with our ongoing program of development and improvements that now enable us to manufacture SLTE with levels of performance that match or exceed those available anywhere.
Since 2003, as a prime contractor in the upgrade of Japan's domestic cables, Mitsubishi Electric has supplied a new 16-wave/bay line terminating unit (LTU) that has established a reputation for reliability exceeding even that of its highly-dependable predecessors.
