To ensure that its satellite systems development processes remain at the forefront of the industry, Mitsubishi Electric proceeded with a revolutionary project that utilizes the latest IT tools throughout product development. Known as Kamakura Digital Innovation-21 (KDI-21), the project incorporates the four main areas of mechanical and electrical design, software development and database unification. The system incorporates three-dimensional CAD model data, thus facilitating the visualization of activities, such as modeling, interface verification, design review, conduction and integration, and improving quality by allowing viewers to visually locate design errors early in the product development process. The modeling and simulation facilities can also share the same model view via Internet links during the review stage. The heart of the system is the KDI database, which integrates all of the data and makes it available in a user-friendly format. Information is accessible via portal sites where authorized users can extract required information.
