Diamond Vision

"Develop new business in the area of track-and-field,'' was the request made by head office to the engineers. Considering the task carefully, they turned their efforts to the development of the world's first full-color, high-definition mammoth display system: the Diamond Vision. Cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) are a Mitsubishi Electric forte, and it was decided that this light-emitting technology would be utilized. Even though the planned use in an outdoor environment posed a number of problems that had to be resolved, the merits of CRTs for high picture quality and long service life were great. As development progressed, a marketing decision was made to target Major League Baseball stadiums in the United States. First on the list for Diamond Vision: Dodger Stadium.

But even with the end result in sight, the development team continued to encounter many problems. Specific trouble spots included improving picture quality, reducing heat radiation, and waterproofing components for outdoor use.
