Features of evolutionary models
The X-800 Series had successor units in two categories: for 2-track recorders, the X-80 and X-86; and for 32-track recorders, the X-850 and X880. The last model, the X-880, was released in 1988. At the time, multi-track recording using magnetic tape recorders was the most popular method. But recording to hard-disk drives was the next-generation technology being studied which lead to development of the CD.
