In 1990, Mitsubishi Electric researcher Mitsuru
Matsui stumbled upon an article while researching error-correcting
code (ECC). This article was written by a cryptanalyst from Israel
and would later be known throughout the world as the Differential
Cryptanalysis. Reading this article inspired Matsui to decipher the
internationally recognized US encryption system "DES". In
1994, he accomplished the unthinkable by breaking the encryption.
Matsui’s feat spread a wave of astonishment to encryption researchers
throughout the world. |

In the process of developing an ideal encryption algorithm with
enhanced safety, Mitsubishi Electric went on to establish the "Information
Security System Development Center". In 1995, Matsui played a
key role in the development of a new encryption algorithm. |

Although MISTY
is an abbreviation for Mitsubishi
Improved Security
Technology, it is also the initials
of the researchers involved in its development: Matsui
Mitsuru, Ichikawa Tetsuya, Sorimachi
Jun, Tokita Toshio, and Yamagishi
Atsuhiro. |
