MITSUBISHI INTRANET MEDIA SERVER
"MEDIAGALLERY" TO BE PUT ON MARKET
Tokyo, October 8, 1996 -- Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
announced today
that the company will start selling its advanced Intranet media
server "MediaGallery" MG series, which includes three
models: MG80, MG200 and MG400, the company's first Intranet system
product. The new series provides advanced Intranet environments
to process real-time data such as moving images and sounds at high
speeds.
MediaGallery is based on the high-performance motion video distribution
software "StarWorks NT®" for Windows NT®. It is the
first of its kind in the industry, jointly developed by Mitsubishi Electric
and Starlight Networks of the U.S. as a multimedia engine.
What is MediaGallery?
MediaGallery is an Intranet server that integrates Internet and
multimedia technology. It functions as a basic server to construct
Intranets and a multimedia server that can distribute motion video and audio
-- indispensable for a visual information distribution syste
- The new server applies StarWorks NT®, a high-performance motion
video distribution software for Windows NT®, a first in the industry.
This has significantly increased the flexibility of multimedia applications.
- The StarWorks NT Starter Kit®, media-server-system architecture
support software, and Mitsubishi encryption library to ensure security, are
all included in the MediaGallery.
- This is an updated version of the Mitsubishi Multimedia Server System
"MEDIAWAVE."
Background of product development
The rapid diffusion of the Internet and the advancing multimedia age
require higher performance and wider range of information and communications
systems. Intranet systems are attracting attention, since they utilize the
advantages of the Internet to private information networks, e.g. Internet's
cost efficiency and coverage of wide areas. The conventional systems can
however only provide information in a text base through simple WWW server
architecture. Full-scale Intranet systems are strongly required, which
reconstruct information networks and can dramatically enhance customer
services and improve productivity at offices and factories, utilizing
multimedia content such as moving and still images.
Mitsubishi Electric introduces MediaGallery, a fully equipped Intranet
system that combines excellent performance and high reliability. The new
system applies client server technology developed under Internet technology,
a common resource throughout the world, as well as state-of-the-art
multimedia technology. The system also integrates an open environment to
use a wide range of application resources; compliance with multimedia to
process real-time data, such as motion video through Intranet at a high
speed, robust security needed for business; and the flexibility to handle
high-speed, large-capacity networks. The system can also be utilized as a
"regional Intranet" by local governments, and "in-house
Intranet" for science and other museums and aquariums, which use a lot
of images. Mitsubishi Electric will actively promote this new Intranet
system targeting these possible markets.
Background of the joint development by Mitsubishi Electric and Starlight
Networks
Mitsubishi Electric has jointly developed with Starlight Networks of the
U.S., a leading manufacturer of motion video distribution network software,
such as the high-performance motion video network distribution software
called "StarWorks NT®." It applies functions to interact
with the WWW and with multimedia networks such as fast Ethernet, ATM-LANs
and digital satellites on a PC multiprocessor and Windows NT®.
StarWorks NT® has been installed in the Mitsubishi Intranet media
server MediaGallery. Mitsubishi Electric and Starlight Networks will
continue to develop systems that will use StarWorks NT®, which will
invigorate Intranets and open up the Intranet and multimedia markets.

Product features:
- High-Performance, High-Reliability Open Platform
The product lineup includes three new models which incorporate
the Pentium® Pro200MHz. High performance and high reliability
have been achieved by the multiprocessor (MG200 and MG400), RAID-5
disk array, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and multiple power
supplies (MG200 and MG400) for redundancy.
- Advanced Multimedia Functions Available by High-Performance
Motion Video Distribution Software, StarWorks NT®, An Industry
First
The high-performance motion video distribution software StarWorks
NT® for Windows NT®, enables high-speed distribution
of real-time data such as motion video and audio -- the first
time its been applied in the industry. High-quality MPEG-2 video
can be reproduced on a WWW browser at real time and high speed.
Products are available from 15Mbps (simultaneous access by 10
users - please see Note) to 150Mbps (simultaneous access by 100
users - please see Note) per server for each motion video distribution
capacity. The cluster configuration linking a server enables scaleable
interaction with visual information systems, which have extremely
high video utilization. The media server system architecture supports
software MEDIATOOLS that powerfully support development of application
programs using multimedia contents such as motion video and audio.
*Note: In the condition of 1.5Mbps distribution
in MPEG.
