Mitsubishi Offers 8-bit Microcontroller for USB Applications
--The Industry's First Microcontroller with Built-in High-precision
10-bit A/D Converter--
Tokyo, September 5, 1997 -- Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (President:
Takashi Kitaoka) and Mitsubishi Electric Semiconductor Software
Co., Ltd. (President: Ryusuke Enomoto) have jointly developed the
M37530M4, an 8-bit microcontroller with Universal Serial Bus (USB)*
interface for next-generation personal computers. First shipments
will hit the market on September 11, 1997.
* USB is a new Windows 98-compatible personal
computer interface. A consortium consisting of companies such as Intel,
Microsoft, and Compaq is working to draw up standard specifications
for this interface. One of USBs main features is the ability to connect
and disconnect peripheral devices without turning off the computer.
Product Overview The new M37530M4 has built-in controller
circuits and drivers for low-speed USB communications (1.5M bit/sec.)
and is optimized for personal computer input devices. Conventional
USB controller circuits are hardware-driven, and as a result, chip
size tends to be large. Mitsubishi Electric, in cooperation with Microsoft
Corp. (President: Bill Gates) and Digital Stream Co., Ltd. (President:
Tetsuji Aoyagi), has successfully reduced the USB controller circuit
size by more than 50%. Moreover, the USB function can now easily be
updated through simple software adjustments.
Product Features
(1) Built-in USB
controller circuit
Mitsubishi Electric
optimized an 8-bit microcontroller to meet Microsoft's USB specifications
while Digital Stream developed firmware incorporating basic operating
software. Through these efforts, the size of the USB controller
circuit was reduced by more than half. Furthermore, the firmware
is easily upgradable to accommodate subsequent USB specification
updates and performance enhancements.
(2) The industry's first microcontroller
for USB applications with built-in high-precision 10-bit A/D converter
This microcontroller's interface capabilities were confirmed for
various applications when the product's specifications were finalized
with Microsoft. It also integrates all the functions needed for
a microcontroller, such as A/D converter, timer, and serial communication
interface, on a single chip and can be tuned for various input devices
including personal computer keyboards, mice, joysticks for computer
games, etc.
