Mitsubishi Electric to Launch
Mitsubishi 14- and 15-inch TFT-LCD Color Monitors
Launch of the "Phoenix mini," the World's First Next-Generation
Videophone from Japan
Tokyo, September 16, 1997 -- Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
(Takashi Kitaoka, President) has recently developed the RDT141 and
RDT151 TFT-LCD (thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display) color
monitors. These are next-generation display devices that will replace
cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors. Mitsubish Electric will begin taking
orders for the new products and start shipments as outlined below.

Main characteristics
1. Employs a TFT-LCD color panel with a display area equal to
that of a 17-inch CRT monitor (equal to a 15-inch CRT monitor
for the 14-inch model).
2. XGA (extended graphics array; 1024 dots x 768 lines), high
resolution with 260,000 displayable colors
3. Plug-compatible with a CRT monitor using an analog input
4. Space-saving design, allowing users to maximize desk space.
Occupies only about one-third the space required for a 17-inch
CRT (based on comparison with our CRT monitors).
5. Power consumption of 45W or less delivers energy savings.
Uses about one-third the power required for a 17-inch CRT (based
on comparison with our CRT monitors).
6. On-screen display (OSD) enables easy operation of a wide range
of functions.
Background of the launch
LCD monitors are the focus of widespread expectations as the next-generation
computer display devices, replacing CRT monitors. One reason for
these expectations is the tremendous need to save space and energy
in the new information age, in which every employee working in an
organization uses a personal computer. Another reason is that LCD
monitors now offer picture quality superior to that delivered by
CRTs thanks to recent technological innovations.
Mitsubishi Electric's new TFT-LCD monitors, embodying our most
advanced display technologies and the production and marketing know-how
accumulated during our years of experience with Diamond Thoron CRT
monitors, are designed to meet the market needs identified above.
Profile of the new products
1. Employs a 15-inch, 1024 x 768 TFT-LCD.
High-resolution images of 1024 dots x 768 lines are displayed
on a large 38-cm diagonal screen, corresponding to a 17-inch CRT
monitor (the 14-inch model has a 36-cm diagonal screen, equal
to a 15-inch CRT monitor).
2. Use of analog video input
Connectable with the VGA signal cables attached to existing personal
computers.
3. Multiple scanning feature
Employs an auto-tracking method that handles horizontal synchronous
frequencies of 24.8 to 60.2 kHz and vertical synchronous frequencies
of 56.3 to 85.1 Hz.
Compatible with DOS/V machines, Macintosh (TM), and all other
personal computers.
4. Enlargement function
Capable of full-screen display of formats such as 640 x 480 and
800 x 600.
5. Accepts connection of a USB hub to its base (option).
Allows installation of a USB hub with four down streams. Also
allows connection of a keyboard, mouse, camera, or other USB-compatible
device.
6. Easy operation thanks to on-screen display (OSD) feature
All operations can be performed easily with controls on the main
body by following OSD indications.
7. Thin design, with a thickness of only 160 mm
Both the 14- and 15-inch models are superthin, with a thickness
of only 160 mm; they also weigh only about one-third as much as
a 17-inch CRT monitor.
8. Conforms to specifications around the world.
Each of the countries in the world has its own regulations governing
computer displays. These new products conform to new regulations,
such as TCO95, power-source high-frequency wave control set by
the Swedish labor union, TCO, as well as to existing regulations
on safety, electromagnetic interference, leaked low-frequency
electromagnetic fields, energy-saving features, ergonomics, and
others.
