MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC, VANGUARD INTERNATIONAL
SEMICONDUCTOR AND POWERCHIP SEMICONDUCTOR ANNOUNCE DRAM MANUFACTURING
TECHNOLOGY ALLIANCE
TOKYO, June 23, 1999 -- Mitsubishi Electric
Corporation, Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp. (VIS), an
affiliate of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC),
and Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. (PSC) announced today an agreement
whereby Mitsubishi Electric will transfer dynamic random access
memory (DRAM) manufacturing technology to VIS and PSC.
According to the terms of the agreement, Mitsubishi Electric will
provide VIS and PSC, a Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer in which
Mitsubishi Electric is a key shareholder, with 0.20 micron and 0.18
micron DRAM production process technologies. In addition, VIS will
acquire a portion of Mitsubishi Electric's stake in PSC and will
also take part in PSC's management.
VIS is Taiwan's largest DRAM manufacturer and is an affiliate of
TSMC, Taiwan's largest semiconductor manufacturer and the world's
largest semiconductor foundry manufacturer. PSC has one of the most
advanced production processes as well as one of the largest DRAM
production capacities among Taiwanese manufacturers. The joint management
of these two companies will thus create a DRAM producer with one
of the largest production capacities in the world.
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has already completed the development
of the world's smallest 64 megabit DRAM chip produced using 0.18
micron process technology. The company's strategy is to increase
its competitiveness in the face of severe market conditions by utilizing
advanced process technology and securing large-scale production
capacity. In the future, the three companies plan to strengthen
their cooperative ties and establish a firm position in the global
semiconductor market.
The alliance among the three companies will create a corporate
group with large-scale DRAM production capacity, and Mitsubishi
Electric will provide the central element of advanced process technology.
In addition, the new alliance will allow Mitsubishi Electric increased
flexibility in meeting the supply demands of DRAM customers.
