Boeing
Company - Mitsubishi Electric Corporation Collaboration in a New
High-Speed Global Communications Service
The Boeing Company and Mitsubishi
Electric Corporation (MELCO) are pleased to announce plans to
cooperate in the development of a global communications network
and other services that will revolutionize the way people travel.
MELCO will cooperate with Boeing in many areas such as phased
array antennas, satellite transponders, orbital slots, regulatory
approvals, and others as a regional partner covering Japan and
potentially other Asian markets. Yesterday, Mr. Condit, Boeing's
CEO and Chairman unveiled this high-speed global communications
service called Connexion by Boeing in New York
City.
In the past three years, Boeing
has developed new architectures and technologies that enable high-speed
data communications via a space-based network for moving platforms
such as airplanes. The key enabling technology is Boeing's advanced
phased array antenna specifically developed for this application
which uses existing satellites to provide customers the ability
to send and receive data at rates equivalent to cable internet
access. MELCO also has developed key technologies related to phased
array antennas which is applicable to this project. With Connexion by Boeing,
airline passengers will enjoy a new array of services including
Internet and corporate Intranet access, e-commerce, live television
and entertainment, e-mail, travel and destination information,
and others - all in real time. Airline operators will benefit
from in-flight access to aircraft and crew data.
Boeing and MELCO are investing
to become leaders in the information technology and mobile economy.
Boeing has clearly demonstrated its long term strategy and commitment
to this market through its pending acquisition of Hughes Space
& Communications. Both companies have developed technologies relevant
to digital broadband capability that provides wide bandwidth for
mobile communication applications. Both companies acknowledge
space based and mobile communications as exciting growth markets
and by working together, they will be able to enhance their presence
and leadership in the global markets. MELCO's participation in
Connexion by Boeing is only the beginning of a long term and
fruitful collaboration between Boeing and MELCO.
