MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC RESTRUCTURES EUROPEAN MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS
BUSINESS
TOKYO, February 28, 2002--Mitsubishi
Electric Corporation announced today that it has reviewed its European
mobile communications business structure and made the decision to
restructure its local operations there.
Mitsubishi Electric Telecom Europe S.A. (METE), the company that
currently focuses on research and development, manufacture, sales
and marketing activities for mobile phones in Europe, will cease
operations by the end of December 2002 and be dissolved soon thereafter.
In METE's place, Mitsubishi Electric will form a new company, targeted
for establishment in January 2003, that will concentrate on research,
development and marketing activities for high-end GPRS phones geared
to the European market.
In the new scheme, plans call for Mitsubishi Electric's base in
China, Mitsubishi Soyea Mobile Communication Equipment Co., Ltd.
(MSM), to provide mobile terminal manufacturing services.
