MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC INTEGRATES USB 2.0
FUNCTIONALITY WITH 16-BIT MCU TO OPTIMISE
PORTABLE AUDIO AND INTERNET CONNECTIVITY
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- June 18, 2002 --
In line with the increased demand for highly functional single-chip
Universal Serial Bus (USB) solutions for digital audio applications,
the Electronic Device Group of Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics
USA, Inc., introduced a 16-bit embedded microcontroller (MCU) with
full-speed USB functions. The M16C/245 (M30245) integrates high
capacity memory and USB 2.0 functionality with an M16C MCU core
-- noted for its C language efficiency, fast processing speed,
low power consumption, and exceptional EMI/EMS performance --
into a single chip. The device is also capable of performing communication
data operation processing and main processing, making it ideal for
portable audio applications and high-speed Internet content delivery.
The MCU is the latest addition to Mitsubishi Electric's USB family,
and was co-developed by Mitsubishi Electric System LSI Design Corporation
in Japan and Mitsubishi Electric's Design Engineering Center, based
in North Carolina.
"The USB market is driven by a number of factors: speed, functionality,
and due to the demand for smaller portable devices, integration,"
said Richard Sessions, director of embedded systems at Mitsubishi
Electric & Electronics USA, Inc. "By utilizing our extensive
design resources in Japan and North America, we have combined our
expertise in USB with our industry-leading M16C MCU core to meet
customer demand and deliver optimal speed with increased functionality
in a single chip."
Using a small, thin 100-pin LQFP package, the device features up
to a maximum of nine endpoints. The M16C/245 can perform transfer
mode on each endpoint, while not only the buffer size, but also
each endpoint on transfer mode can be set optionally. A multi-function
serial I/O that can transfer up to 32-bit data has been embedded
into two channels, which allows serial sound interface with audio
codecs. Additionally, there is a CRC (CRC-CCITT, CRC-16) operations
circuit embedded for various memory cards, making it possible to
select a generative polynomial best suited for the product application.
Packaging and Availability
Mitsubishi Electric's M16C/245 (M30245) is available in a 100-pin
LQFP package. Samples will be available in July 2002, with volume
production scheduled for September 2002.
