Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology used in car navigation systems is relatively accurate to within 30 meters (about 100 feet), but Mitsubishi Electric's Location Based Service (LBS) technology is set to provide a level of precision and utility like never before.
The company's unique Positioning Augmentation Services (PAS) combine GPS with a network of GPS reference stations on the ground to transmit augmentation signals over mobile phones, enabling people to pinpoint their location to within a few centimeters. It's so precise it can be used in surveying and construction. It can also pinpoint location vertically, such as elevation on a mountain, or inside a high-rise building when combined with other LBS technologies. Three-dimensional maps provide easy-to-comprehend area specific information (ASI) during natural disasters and situations requiring accurate navigation.
