Mitsubishi Electric is at the forefront in developing fiber optic communications technologies to keep data secure for banks, defense networks and other systems with ultra-high security needs. This includes quantum cryptography, which has the advantage of being able to detect eavesdropping on communication channels, and is expected to bring the world unbreakable cryptography, since it carries data on photons.
The challenge with quantum cryptography lies in the poor efficiency levels for the single-photon detector, which prevents transmission over great lengths. Mitsubishi Electric's experiments have broken a key barrier, achieving successful results by sending encryption keys over 87km (54 miles), the world's longest distance to date.
