Mitsubishi Electric is integrating familiar technologies into systems designed to make life on the road more convenient. Take the smart card, for example. By using the same wireless, bi-directional DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications) technology already in use for Electronic Toll Collection (ETM) on highways, payment for fuel, maintenance, repairs and more can be made automatically at service stations.
And how's this for an easy fill-up: As a vehicle approaches the station, its dashboard navigation system switches to display a fueling screen. The driver enters a PIN code, selects the fuel and quantity, and this information is transmitted to a dedicated terminal carried by forecourt staff. Payment is made via a smart card reader mounted in the vehicle.
